Team India will have revenge on their minds when they take on reigning world champions Australia in the first semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Stadium (DIS) on Tuesday (March 4). It is the first ODI match between the two sides since the 2023 ODI World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which Australians won.
Rohit Sharma’s side have been on a roll, winning their last 5 ODI matches on the trot while Steve Smith-led Australia have just won one out of their last 5 matches. Australians haven’t had much of game time as well with their last two matches in the ICC Champions Trophy in Rawalpindi and Lahore getting washed out due to rain.
Australia are already without their front-line bowling attack including skipper Pat Cummins and spearhead Mitchell Starc. They also lost opener Matthew Short due to a quadriceps injury. If Australians pick Short’s replacement Cooper Connolly as a spin-bowling all-rounder, in-form wicketkeeper Josh Inglis could be promoted to the top of the order to open along-side Travis Head.
India, on the other hand, can be tempted to stick with the four spinner’s combination after Varun Chakravarthy’s five-wicket haul against New Zealand in the last match. Although the India vs Australia semifinal will be played on a new pitch, the track is expected to take turn like in the other matches in Dubai due to the dry nature of the square. Australians might also be tempted to add Tanveer Sangha as the second specialist spinner along with Adam Zampa.
