The USA has made history by becoming the first team to successfully defend a total of less than 125 runs in an ODI match, managing to protect a score of 122 against Oman. This achievement surpasses the previous record for the lowest total defended in the 50-over format, which was set by India in 1985, when they defended 125 runs against Pakistan during the Rothman’s Four-Nation Cup.

New Delhi: The ODI cricket scene is gearing up for a major event, the Champions Trophy 2025, which will kick off on February 19 (Wednesday) at the National Stadium in Karachi. Interestingly, just one day prior to this significant tournament, the USA, which is not participating in the 8-team competition, has set a remarkable ODI world record that had been held by India for four decades. In their ICC ODI World Cup League 2 match against Oman, the USA made history by winning the game by 57 runs at Al Ameerat, marking a significant achievement as the first team to reach this milestone.

The USA was dismissed for 122 runs in their first innings. In the second innings, they managed to bowl out Oman for a mere 65 runs. This achievement made them the first team ever to successfully defend a total of less than 125 runs in an ODI match. The previous record for the lowest total defended in the 50-over format was held by India, who defended 125 runs against Pakistan in the Rothman’s Four-Nation Cup back in 1985, winning the match by 38 runs.

In the second innings, the USA opted not to bowl any pace overs, completing 25.3 overs before dismissing Oman for 65 runs. This marks a historic moment in ODI cricket, as it is the first instance where a team has not bowled a single over of pace in a full innings. Noshthush Kenjige stood out among the USA bowlers, achieving impressive figures of 5 wickets for 11 runs.

In the match, spinners claimed 19 of the 20 wickets, matching the record for the highest number of wickets taken by spinners in an ODI match. This record was previously set during a 2011 game between Bangladesh and Pakistan, where spinners also took 19 out of 20 wickets.

The USA and Oman collectively managed to score only 187 runs in 61 overs of play. This marks the second-lowest total in One Day Internationals when both teams have been dismissed.
