T20I Captain Suryakumar Yadav of India stresses on not taking away the Rohit Sharma’s individual qualities by speaking into stump mic. Surya takes over the captaincy mantle with fleet of youth and veterans left behind after Rohit retires from T20 Internationals. He relishes the position, saying it is more of a responsibility than what he used to, but essentially stays the same.

New Delhi: India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav stated that he makes an effort to avoid the stump microphone to allow Rohit Sharma’s unique qualities to shine. Suryakumar assumed the captaincy following Rohit’s retirement from T20s after the 2024 World Cup victory. He has been effectively guiding the Indian team during this transitional period following the retirements of both Rohit and Virat Kohli.
Rohit continues to captain India in ODIs and T20Is and is recognized for his entertaining moments captured by the stump microphone, which have gained widespread attention. However, Surya does not seem inclined to compete with him in this aspect.
“Try karta hoon door rahoon stumps se. Agar kisi ka woh specialty hai toh won unhe ke sath rahe toh zada better hai.” (I try to stay away from the stumps. If it’s someone’s specialty, then it’s better that it stays with that person only),” he said on Star Sports.
Surya supported Rohit’s behavior by referencing his famous line about the garden.
“Haan woh jab hum ghumte rehte hai garden mai, woh sunne ko mil hi jata hai.” (Yes, when we roam in the garden, we get to hear those things.),” he added.
He indicated that there is no need to instruct his players to stay within certain areas of the field.
“Nahi, mai nahi rokta hu kisi ko kyuki koi ghumta hi nahi hai.” (I don’t stop anyone because no one roams around.),” he said.
Under Surya’s guidance, the team has flourished, with rising stars like Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy making notable progress alongside seasoned athletes such as Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh, and Hardik Pandya. This combination of youthful talent and experience has infused the squad with a revitalizing energy.
The newly appointed T20I captain is enjoying his role in leading the Indian team and mentioned that he does not notice a significant change despite the increased responsibilities.
“Both are fun. It’s just an added responsibility. I am doing the same thing that I was doing earlier as well. It’s just that something has been added in the bracket now. Nothing much has changed. Fun is there,” he added.
