ICC Champions Trophy: Mohammed Shami matches Zaheer Khan’s unwanted record during India’s clash against Pakistan. Read more about the bowling milestone and match highlights.

New Delhi: Mohammed Shami had a forgettable start to India’s 2025 Champions Trophy match against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday (February 23) after he bowled the opening over of the game following Mohammad Rizwan’s choice to bat first after winning the toss.
Shami delivered the first over of the match, conceding six runs, which typically wouldn’t be a concern for India. However, he needed 11 deliveries to complete the over, bowling five wides, while Pakistan managed just one run off the bat.
Mohammed Shami Equals Dubious Record
Shami’s 11-ball over stands as the joint longest by an Indian bowler in ODI history. He matched Zaheer Khan’s record from the 2003 Cricket World Cup final against Australia at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Irfan Pathan also bowled an 11-ball over during an ODI against West Indies at Sabina Park in Jamaica in 2006.
Shami became the first Indian bowler to deliver five wides in a single over in ODI history. In comparison, Zaheer Khan’s opening over in the 2003 World Cup final included four wides and a no-ball, while Irfan Pathan’s 11-ball over against West Indies featured two no-balls and three wides. Notably, there have been eight instances of Indian bowlers conceding four wides in an over, with Zaheer accounting for four of them.
Mohammed Shami’s 11-ball over ranks as the third-longest in Champions Trophy history, trailing only Bangladesh’s Hasibul Hossain (2000) and Zimbabwe’s Tinashe Panyangara (2004), who each bowled 13-ball overs.
