Indian BSE and NSE to Remain Closed on Christmas Day

The Indian stock markets, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), will be closed on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, in observance of Christmas. This will mark the final stock market holiday of the year. Similarly, most global markets, including those in the UK, US, and Europe, will also remain shut tomorrow.

On December 25, there will be no trading or settlement in the stock, derivatives, or securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments. Additionally, both the currency and commodity markets will be closed for the day. However, trading will resume on Thursday, December 26, 2024.

The next stock market holiday in India will be observed on February 26, 2025, for Mahashivratri.

Stock Market Trading Hours

The Indian stock market operates on weekdays (Monday to Friday) from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, with a pre-open session from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM. The markets are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Will the Commodity Market Be Open on Christmas?

Both the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will remain closed on December 25, 2024, for both morning and evening trading sessions.

Market Recap

On Monday, December 23, the key indices, Sensex and Nifty, ended a five-day losing streak, closing in the green. The BSE Sensex rose by 0.64%, adding 498.58 points to reach 78,540.17, while the NSE Nifty50 surged 0.95%, gaining 165 points to close at 23,753.45.

On the Sensex, 20 out of 30 stocks closed in positive territory, with ITC, Tech Mahindra, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, and IndusInd Bank among the top gainers. Meanwhile, Zomato, Maruti, and HCL Tech were the biggest laggards.

Similarly, on the Nifty, 32 out of 50 stocks closed higher, with JSW Steel, ITC, and Hindalco leading the pack, while HeroMoto Corp, Maruti, and HCL Tech were the notable losers.

As we head into the holiday season, all eyes will be on how the markets perform when they resume trading on December 26.
